What Causes Osteoporosis?
There are several risk factors that can increase your chances of developing osteoporosis. For example, a family history of fractures can be a red flag, especially if you are going through menopause and have other risk factors. If you have these risk factors, contact our osteoporosis clinic to learn more about your risk. Though not extensive by any means, here are some more common contributing factors to osteoporosis:
Risk Factors for Osteoporosis
- Family history of fractures. This may indicate an underlying genetic issue with bone loss
- Aging (reduced bone production)
- Woman going through Menopause (reduced estrogen levels)
- Men in later stages of life (decreased levels of testosterone)
- Poor nutrition and bad eating habits (low calcium)
- Smoking
- Alcohol abuse
- Lack of regular exercise to stimulate healthy bone and muscle development and maintenance
- Certain medications, like steroids and anticonvulsants
- Certain illnesses, like thyroid disease or bone cancer
Women over the age of 65 should have a bone mineral density (BMD) test to check for osteoporosis. BMD testing is also recommended for post-menopausal women with a history of fractures and women younger than 65 with other risk factors. It’s a great early detection method that may help set you up with the treatment you need for a healthier you.
Symptoms & Treatment
Bone fractures in the spine, wrists, or hips are usually the first indication of osteoporosis. As the bone disease progresses, you may notice tenderness or pain in your neck or lower back. Though at times subtle at first, we encourage our patients not to ignore these early symptoms and take notice of pains and aches as they start to develop. Osteoporosis can also affect your posture, causing loss of height. Our friendly specialists would love the opportunity to provide you with effective care tailored to you!
The pain from osteoporosis can be relieved with treatment, which can help prevent faster degradation of bone and ultimately, reduce the risk of traumatic falls – the primary cause of fractures. Supplements like calcium and vitamin D may be recommended along with other lifestyle adjustments to slow bone loss. For some patients, medications can be an effective way to reduce the risk of fractures and prevent further bone loss. Everyone is unique, and depending on your individual needs, we will make the necessary recommendations and help ease you into a better lifestyle that you can enjoy without the pains and aches holding you back.
Without treatment, osteoporosis-related fractures can lead to disability. Many older adults with osteoporosis eventually need assistance getting around due to weakened, fragile bones. To prevent this from happening, it is important to know your risk for osteoporosis and understand how your lifestyle may have an impact.
